qr code

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

qrcode-sptapestryon a lark today i setup a qr code for the tapestry website. in theory you should be able to point your smart phone at this image, scan it with a qr code app and then automatically be taken to the church website.  the problem is that i don’t own a smart phone so i can’t really check it out. even if i did have a smart phone i’m not sure how effective it is to even have a qr code. still i think tapestry is the first church in wisconsin to have its own qr code and it was free. woohoo! now my life is complete :)

the only thing that i have actually thought of doing with it is beginning to place it on various posters i make for the few special tapestry gatherings we do every now and then. i might also have some stickers made that i can place on various things in hopes that someone discovers them and scans them. i might set it up to a special qr code page on the church website just so the people who use it feel special. i like for geeks to feel special. it makes me feel special.

of course, i might just make it link to this.

my geek chart

ratterrell’s geek chart

geek chart maps out your online social content and displays it. apparently i am much more prolific on my blog and twitter than anything else. i think when they add facebook the leading percentage will change. this is because of the fact that everything i do online links back to my facebook account.

SIDE NOTE – anyone interested in teaming up with me to run the Fall 50? i’m training for the chicago marathon on october 11th and therefore don’t think i could get ready for a 50 miler two weeks afterward. however, i would love to run this race with a team. we can have from 2-5 people. my hope is for 3-5. anyway, it would be cool to run an ultramarathon even if it is only as a relay. if you are interested or have a team that needs a slow member, then let me know.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – i think all my missouri friends will enjoy knowing that we have wild rhubarb growing in our backyard. i don’t really care for rhubarb pie so we will just use the plants for ornamental purposes.

dropbox

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

okay – i’m sold on dropbox. 2 gb of free webspace and synchronizes any computers i have linked to it. perfect for keeping tapestry files the same on the desktop and laptop. it works real well for me working on a file that will be used at one of our sunday evening gatherings and automatically having that file updated on the other computers. it’s a cool thing.

if you need some of your files to be the same on multiple computers it is a great way to do it. if you decide to try it out, please let me know first. if i send you an invite and you register i get an additional 250 mb of space.

it worked

Friday, February 27th, 2009

two weeks ago i posted about sending a usb hub back to the manufacturer to get them to replace it or throw it away. i’m glad to report that kikkerland sent me a new one. it cost me $1.25 to mail it back to kikkerland and a handwritten note asking them to stand behind the product or throw it away for me but i now have a new working usb hub.

SIDE NOTE – 1st question – anyone interested in a little bracket competition for the ncaa tournament?

SIDE SIDE NOTE – 2nd question – anyone in stevens point interested in forming a team for this year’s trivia contest?

stand up for your product or throw it away

usb port man

awhile back i read this article at lifehacker (which you should add to your rss reader right now). basically it recommended sending broken beyond warranty stuff back to the manufacture instead of just throwing it away. if it’s just small stuff it won’t cost you much and there is apparently a pretty decent chance that you will get something back. so i’m trying this out today. i bought the above usb hub for one of our computers about 7 months ago. the other day it decided to stop working. the warranty was only 3 months but surely it should have lasted longer. so i’m sending it back to kikkerland to see if they will stand behind their product or not.

we’ll see what happens.

curling smack

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

this is great. it’s a curling blog and about 3/4s of the way down this post they make the following statement concerning the video of me curling that i posted for arnold:

Come on Robert, your pal Arnold expects more than this

that’s right my second year skills were trashed on by people that i don’t even know. i’ll admit that it was a rough night (we were killed – 12 to 2) but i wasn’t expecting to be randomly slammed by strangers. the curling world used to be so much nicer.

gmail stickers

gmail stickers

i missed this before but apparently you can get free gmail stickers of you send a sase to gmail. stickers are good. here’s the link.

SIDE NOTE – i am constantly amazed that the "pregnant man," thomas beatie, keeps on being on t.v. and other media. i just don’t get it. beatie is pregnant because of a functioning uterus and two X chromosones. no amount of surgery or legal recognition as a man can change that. i don’t have anything against beatie, i just don’t get the fascination with something that i don’t think is in anyway a medical oddity.

SIDE SIDE NOTE – anyone around point have access to hair clippers, a baber’s cape (the thing that covers the front of your body when you are getting your hair cut), and/or a portable barber’s chair? i need them for next sunday’s tapestry worship gathering. if you have any of these items it would be helpful.

asus 901

Monday, June 30th, 2008

everyone i have talked to concerning planting a portable church has told me to try and have contingency plans for as much as you can. so of this means have duplicates for everything possible. several of the people i have talked to have described how often they have computer problems (laptops take a decent amount of abuse). therefore several have recommended having a second laptop. that’s why i’m looking at an ultra portable for a back up computer. they are extremely small, solid state (thus no moving parts) and relatively cheap. the asus 901 should be coming out in the u.s. this week. depending upon what the street price for this thing ends up being it will probably be the computer i get for tapestry’s spare. it’s a small little bugger that would do everything we need. in fact, i might use it to send out a live feed of the service via the internet.

google docs

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

i’ve mentioned it several times in the past but i’ll say it again … i love google docs. i just spent the past 30 minutes editing our project mayhem document with mike. he’s at his home and i’m at mine but we are both typing away on the document over the web. it’s great.
